Question 1

What does the Expat183 day tracker do

Accepted Answer

It is a simple tool for logging the days you spend in each country over a tax year. Many countries apply a day-count test as one factor in deciding tax residency, and the thresholds differ from country to country. Keeping an accurate record helps you see where you stand, though the rules that apply to you are best confirmed with a qualified professional.

Question 2

Does the tracker tell me where I am tax resident

Accepted Answer

No. The tracker records and displays your day counts as general information only. It does not determine your tax residency, give tax advice, or account for the many other factors that residency tests can involve. For your own situation, consult a qualified tax adviser.

Question 3

Is it for digital nomads or for expats

Accepted Answer

Both, and for anyone whose year is split across borders. A digital nomad moving every few weeks, an expat settled abroad with regular trips home, and a remote worker splitting the year between two countries all face the same problem, which is knowing how the days actually added up.

Question 4

How are my days recorded

Accepted Answer

You can log days yourself as you travel, and two optional shortcuts stay off until you turn them on. Signing in can suggest the country you are in, and your own forwarding address turns a flight or hotel confirmation into dated drafts. Nothing is recorded as a day until you confirm it, we do not keep the network address a country was worked out from, and you can delete a forwarded email, and what was read from it, at any time. Reading a confirmation runs privately on our own servers, and it never leaves our servers without your approval. It is not sent to a third-party AI provider.

Question 5

When should I start keeping a day record

Accepted Answer

As early in the year as you can. Day counts are far easier to keep as you go than to reconstruct months later from boarding passes and memory, and an accurate record is what makes the totals worth looking at.

Question 6

Is my travel information private

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your day records are private to your account and are not shared without your approval.

Question 7

Which countries do you have rules for

Accepted Answer

We hold day-count rule sets for the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, Malta, India, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, Thailand, Italy and Poland, with two separate sets for the United Kingdom. Each one links to the official source it was taken from. Rules change and they differ in what they count, so treat the totals as general information and confirm what applies to you with a qualified professional.

Question 8

Can I share where I am with my family

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is a separate choice from tracking your days. You invite each person yourself and decide what they can see: the country you are in, the city, or your exact position, plus whether your accommodation and contact numbers are included. You can revoke a share at any time.

Question 9

What happens if I miss a check-in

Accepted Answer

If you have set a check-in schedule and miss one, we notify the contacts you chose. We don't contact emergency services, don't grant anyone access to your account or documents, and don't take any other action. It is a way to let the people you picked know something is worth a phone call, not an emergency service.

Question 10

Do you email me when I get close to a threshold

Accepted Answer

Only if you ask for it. If you switch the daily alert on, we can email you when a running total is approaching the next band in a rule set you follow. It is a prompt to take a look, not a determination that anything has happened, and it does not tell you what your position is.

Question 11

Do I have to log every day by hand

Accepted Answer

No, though you can. With your consent, signing in can suggest the country you are in, and you can forward flight and hotel confirmations to your own address so the dates and places are pulled out for you. Both routes create drafts you confirm or reject, and both start switched off.
