Legal Disclaimers
IMPORTANT: Please read these disclaimers carefully. They cover every site the same operator runs (TheWILL.ai, Orchard72, Expat183 and The Family Group) and contain important information about your legal rights and limitations when using any of those services.
Documents produced on Expat183 are DRAFTS, not executed wills.
A will only takes legal effect once you have signed it in accordance with the formal execution requirements of your jurisdiction. For example, section 9 of the Wills Act 1837 (which applies in England & Wales) requires the testator's signature to be made or acknowledged in the presence of two competent adult witnesses, who must then each attest and sign in the testator's presence. Other jurisdictions impose different execution formalities. Until your draft has been properly executed under the law that applies to you, it is not a legally binding will and will not pass your estate on death.
1. No Legal Advice
Expat183 is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. The information, documents, and services provided through our platform are for informational and self-help purposes only. We do not practise law in any state of the United States, and the legal professionals listed on our platform are licensed in their own jurisdictions and are responsible for their own advice.
Our service provides self-help tools and templates designed to guide you through the will creation process. These tools are based on standard legal formats and common estate planning practices, but they cannot account for every individual circumstance or complex legal situation.
We offer general information about wills and estate planning to help you understand the process and make informed decisions. This information is educational and may not address your specific situation. You may want to consult a qualified legal professional for advice tailored to your circumstances.
Our AI-assisted document preparation helps you create a will based on your inputs. While the AI is trained on legal documents and best practices, it cannot exercise legal judgment or provide the nuanced advice that a qualified legal professional would offer.
Every will created on our platform is reviewed by an independent qualified will writer or solicitor of your choice from our directory before it can be finalised. The reviewer checks your draft for common errors and against the formal requirements of your jurisdiction; this is a review for completeness and formality and is not a guarantee that your will is legally valid or that it meets every requirement of your circumstances. The reviewer is independently engaged by you: although we facilitate the engagement and verify their credentials, they are not employees of Expat183, are not legal professionals instructed by us, and provide their professional services to you directly. The scope of legal advice or representation they provide is set in your engagement with them.
For specific legal advice regarding your circumstances, estate planning needs, or complex situations, we strongly recommend consulting with a qualified legal professional licensed to practise in your jurisdiction.
2. No Legal Professional-Client Relationship
Using Expat183 does not create a legal professional-client relationship (however it is described where you live, for example a solicitor-client or attorney-client relationship) between you and Expat183, its employees, contractors, or any will writers who may review your documents. Communications through our platform are not protected by legal professional privilege in any form.
3. Accuracy of Information
While we strive to provide accurate and up-to-date information:
- Laws change frequently and vary by jurisdiction
- Information may not be applicable to your specific situation
- We cannot guarantee the accuracy or completeness of any information
- You should verify all information independently
The responsibility for ensuring your will meets legal requirements and accurately reflects your wishes rests entirely with you.
4. AI-Generated Content and Document Processing
Our service uses artificial intelligence to assist with document creation and processing:
- AI suggestions are based on general patterns and may not suit your specific needs
- AI cannot replace human judgment or legal expertise
- You must review and verify all AI-generated content
- We are not responsible for errors in AI-generated suggestions
- Document extraction from PDFs, images, or handwritten documents may contain errors
- OCR technology may misinterpret text, especially handwritten content
- Quality scores provided are estimates and not guarantees of accuracy
- Always verify extracted information against original documents
Use of your data: We never sell your data. Your raw documents, entries and personal details are never used to train any AI model. To improve our own models we may use de-identified interaction data from which names, addresses and other identifying details have been removed. Third-party AI providers are contractually prohibited from training on your data. This commitment is set out in full in our Privacy Policy.
Important: AI-generated content and extracted data should always be carefully reviewed. Do not rely solely on automated suggestions or extractions for critical legal documents.
5. AI Transcription of Consultations
When video consultations are recorded with the consent of all parties, our platform uses AI-powered speech-to-text technology to generate transcripts:
- Transcripts are automated estimates, not verbatim records of the conversation
- AI transcription may contain errors, omissions, or misinterpretations
- Technical factors (audio quality, accents, background noise, overlapping speech) can affect accuracy
- Transcripts should not be treated as authoritative legal records
- You should review any transcript for accuracy before relying on its content
Important: AI-generated transcripts are provided as a convenience to help you recall consultation discussions. They are not a substitute for your own notes or for documented legal advice from your legal professional.
6. Professional Consultation Services
Our platform facilitates connections between consumers and independent legal professionals. The following disclaimers apply to all consultation services:
- Legal professionals listed on our platform are independent practitioners, not employees or agents of Expat183
- Expat183 does not provide legal advice through professional consultations. The professional is solely responsible for their advice
- We do not guarantee the quality, accuracy, or suitability of advice received during consultations
- Professional credentials displayed are based on information provided by the professionals themselves
- You should independently verify any professional's qualifications and regulatory status
- Consultation outcomes depend on the accuracy and completeness of information you provide to the professional
Expat183 acts solely as a technology platform. Any professional relationship is formed directly between you and the legal professional, not with Expat183.
7. Chat and Messaging Services
Our platform provides in-consultation chat and messaging functionality. When using these services, please be aware of the following:
- Chat messages exchanged during consultations are retained in accordance with our Privacy Policy
- Messages related to will preparation may be retained permanently as part of the will file
- Chat is not a substitute for documented legal advice. Always request formal written advice for important matters
- Messages may be included in responses to data subject access requests (DSARs)
- Do not share sensitive information (passwords, financial account details) via chat
- Chat functionality is provided as a convenience during scheduled consultations and is not a 24/7 communication channel
Important: Chat messages are not privileged communications. Information shared via chat may be discoverable in legal proceedings. For privileged legal advice, consult your legal professional directly.
8. Jurisdictional Limitations
Our service is designed for use in specific jurisdictions:
- Preparing a will or another legal document is currently available for ๐ฌ๐ง United Kingdom - England, ๐ฌ๐ง United Kingdom - Wales and ๐ฒ๐น Malta, with more jurisdictions coming soon. In a jurisdiction that is not available yet, we do not generate the document; Expat183 still offers its other services there (such as asset records, secure document storage, preparedness assessments and professional consultations), and you can register your interest to hear when document preparation launches. See our jurisdictions page for the current position.
- Laws vary significantly between jurisdictions
- Documents may not be valid outside supported jurisdictions
- International estates require specialised legal advice
- Tax residence is a separate question from where your will is valid or which law governs your estate. For example, from 6 April 2025 the United Kingdom determines exposure to inheritance tax by long-term residence (broadly, residence in at least 10 of the previous 20 tax years) rather than by domicile. Any residence-based indicators we show are factual and for information only, not tax advice. For your circumstances, consult a qualified legal professional and tax adviser.
If you have assets in multiple countries or complex international considerations, please consult with legal professionals in each relevant jurisdiction.
9. Document Validity
Expat183 generates wills for self-help purposes only. You MUST have a qualified will writer or solicitor review your will before execution to ensure it is valid and enforceable in your jurisdiction.
The validity of your will depends on proper execution:
- You must follow all legal requirements for signing and witnessing
- Requirements vary by jurisdiction
- Improper execution may invalidate your will
- We cannot verify or guarantee proper execution
We provide general guidance on execution requirements, but you are responsible for ensuring your will is properly executed according to applicable laws.
10. Complex Situations
Our service may not be suitable for complex situations including but not limited to:
- Estates approaching the estate, inheritance, or death-duty thresholds applicable in your jurisdiction
- Business ownership or complex asset structures
- Trusts (beyond simple provisions for minors)
- International assets or beneficiaries
- Contentious family situations
- Special needs beneficiaries
- Charitable giving with tax implications
If your estate spans multiple countries or involves cross-border assets, inheritance-tax planning across borders, or cross-border trusts, you MUST consult qualified legal professionals in each relevant jurisdiction before relying on documents generated by our service.
For the other situations listed above, we strongly recommend seeking professional legal advice before using our service.
11. No Guarantee of Outcomes
We cannot and do not guarantee:
- Your will's legal validity or enforceability
- That your wishes will be carried out as intended
- Tax efficiency or optimisation
- Prevention of will contests or disputes
- Compliance with all applicable laws
12. Limitation of Liability
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for: (a) death or personal injury caused by our negligence; (b) fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; (c) breach of the terms implied by sections 49 and 50 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (reasonable care and skill, and information about the trader or service to be binding) or any other statutory consumer protection that cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted; or (d) any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded under English law. The limitations below apply only to the extent permitted by law.
Subject to the paragraph above, to the maximum extent permitted by law:
- We disclaim all warranties, express or implied
- We are not liable for any damages arising from use of our service
- We are not responsible for third-party services or content
Where our liability to you is capped, the cap is the one set out in Section 10.3 of our Terms and Conditions (the greater of ยฃ10,000 or the fees you paid in the relevant 12-month period), and no different or lower limit applies. Nothing in these disclaimers reduces the rights that Section gives you.
13. Changes in Law
Laws governing wills and estates change frequently. We endeavour to update our service to reflect changes, but:
- There may be delays in implementing updates
- You should verify current legal requirements
- Existing documents may need updating when laws change
- We are not obligated to notify you of legal changes
14. Third-Party Services and Video Consultations
When you engage independent professionals through our platform (will review, video consultations, or other services):
- These are independent service providers
- We are not responsible for their services or advice
- Additional terms and conditions may apply
- Disputes should be resolved directly with the provider
- Video consultations with legal professionals do not create a legal professional-client relationship with Expat183, however that relationship is described where you live
- Recording of consultations requires consent from all parties
- Professional advice received is the responsibility of the individual professional
- We do not verify the credentials or advice of independent professionals

15. Third-Party Market Data and News Content
Where you hold or track securities, our platform may surface financial news, market data, sentiment indicators, regulatory filings, and other editorial content sourced from independent third-party providers. The following applies to all such content:
- This content is produced and published by third parties. It is not authored, edited, or endorsed by Expat183
- We do not verify and cannot guarantee the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, or impartiality of third-party news or market data
- Market data may be delayed, and news may contain errors or reflect only the views of the original publisher
- This content is provided for general information only and is not financial, investment, tax, or legal advice
- Any opinions, ratings, or forecasts within third-party content are those of the originating provider, not Expat183
- Third-party content may be subject to the originating provider's own terms of use
Sector classifications and sector themes. Some of our tools group companies into sectors and show you the companies a sector contains, together with a weighting. Those groupings and weightings are a third party's sector classification, not our own assessment of any company. A sector theme is a research tool that lists what a classification puts under a sector. It is not a recommendation, it is not a model portfolio, it is not personalised to you, and it is not a forecast of future performance. Which companies appear, and in what proportion, depends entirely on the filters you choose and on the classification provider's own methodology, which may change and may be wrong. Some companies a classification lists have no traded security we can follow, so no price or holding information is available for them.
Important: Do not make financial or estate-planning decisions based solely on third-party news, market data, or sector classifications shown on our platform. Always verify information independently and consult a qualified professional about your specific circumstances.
16. Data Accuracy
You are responsible for:
- Providing accurate and complete information
- Updating information as circumstances change
- Reviewing all documents for accuracy
- Correcting any errors before execution
17. Controller Identity, Contact, and Complaints
Expat183 is the data controller for the personal data you provide to us.
If you have questions about these disclaimers, our services, or the personal data we hold about you, you can reach us through the contact form on our website. If you are a registered user, please use the contact form in your account dashboard for faster response.
You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data-protection supervisory authority. In the United Kingdom this is the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF (helpline 0303 123 1113, ico.org.uk). 18. Relationship to Our Terms and Governing Law
These disclaimers should be read together with our Terms and Conditions and our Privacy Policy. In the event of any conflict or inconsistency between these disclaimers and our Terms and Conditions on the same subject matter, the Terms and Conditions prevail.
These disclaimers are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and any dispute arising out of or in connection with them is subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, you retain the right to bring proceedings in the courts of the country in which you are habitually resident, and to rely on any mandatory consumer-protection laws of that country that cannot be derogated from by agreement.
