Which countries’ rules we track

The published day rules your recorded stays can be measured against, and what those measurements do and do not mean

The rule sets we hold

Your stays can be measured against the rule sets we hold. Each one has its own window, its own day figures and its own wording, all of which are shown with your result rather than summarised here.

  • United States: Substantial Presence Test (United States)
  • Australia: 183-day test (Australia)

  • Malta: 183-day test (Malta)
  • India: residence day tests (India)
  • Ireland: 183-day and two-year tests (Ireland)
  • Germany: habitual-abode day guide (Germany)
  • France: 183-day guide (France)

The live list, with the day bands and the source link for each rule, is on the residency thresholds by country (opens in a new tab) page, which reads the rules from our servers so it is never out of step with what your account is measured against.

What a rule set contains

  • A window. The country’s tax year, or a rolling twelve months, or a run of consecutive years for the rules that look across more than one.
  • Day bands. Ranges of days, each with a short informational label describing where that number of days sits against the published rule.
  • An official source. A link to the published material the figures were taken from.
  • A disclaimer. Wording explaining the limits of the figure, shown with every result the rule produces.

The words you read come from the rule

Labels and disclaimers are stored with the rule set and rendered exactly as held. Nothing on the page writes its own description of your residency position.

What this coverage is not

  • It is not a complete picture of any country’s residence rules. Day counts are one input among several.
  • It is not tax or legal advice, and it is not specific to your circumstances.
  • It is not a filing, a declaration, or evidence of your status anywhere.
  • It is not exhaustive. Countries without a rule set here may still have day rules of their own.

Use the counter to keep an accurate record of where you have been, and consult a qualified professional before acting on what it shows.

Frequently asked questions

My country is not on the list. Can I still use the tracker?

Yes. Stays are recorded for any country, and the trip, sharing and check-in features work everywhere. What a country outside the list does not have is a day threshold to measure your total against, so you will see your days without a band beside them.

Where do the day figures come from?

Each rule set carries a link to the official published source it was taken from, and that link is shown with the rule. We do not invent thresholds, and where a rule is a general guide rather than a single statutory test the wording says so.

Does appearing in a band mean I am resident there?

No. A band is an informational description of where your recorded days sit against a published figure. Real residence tests weigh other things as well, including ties, homes, work and intention, none of which are assessed here. Consult a qualified professional about your own position.

How often are the rules updated?

The rule sets are held as data rather than in code, so a change can be applied without a release of the app. If you spot something that looks out of date against the official source, please tell us and we will check it.
