The cost of a will in Ghana depends mostly on the lawyer you instruct and how involved your estate is. The Ghana Bar Association publishes a scale of maximum fees, and many lawyers quote below it. This guide sets out the typical figures and what tends to push the price up.
There is no single price. A simple will usually costs a flat fee agreed with the lawyer before the work starts, within the Bar Association scale. Depositing the will with the High Court Registrar is optional and charged separately.
Price does not decide validity. The Wills Act, 1971 sets the formalities, and a will made without a lawyer can still be valid. See do I need a lawyer to write a will for what those rules involve.
Cost tends to follow complexity and the amount of tailored advice, not the length of the document.
A modest estate sits at the lower end; several properties, a business, family land or assets abroad push the price up.
Several households, dependants to provide for or customary family expectations usually call for more careful drafting, which tends to cost more.
Fees in Accra and Kumasi tend to be higher, and a senior lawyer usually charges more than a junior one.
Depositing the will with the High Court, and later changes by codicil, may be charged on top of the drafting fee, so compare what each quote includes.
The table below sets out typical Ghanaian figures for each route, what each usually includes and where the figures come from. They are an overview for information only; always check a lawyer’s current quote before deciding.
