How Much Does a Will Cost in India?

The cost of a will in India runs from almost nothing for a will you write yourself to a substantial fee for an advocate handling a large or complex estate. This guide sets out the typical range for each route and what tends to push the price up.

The short answer

There is no single price. What you pay depends mostly on the route you choose, how involved your estate is and the city you are in. Registering a will at the sub-registrar’s office is optional and carries its own modest fee.

Price does not decide validity. A will is generally valid if it is signed and attested by two witnesses as the law requires, whichever route produced it. See do I need an advocate to write a will for what that involves.

What drives the price

Cost tends to follow complexity and the amount of tailored advice, not the length of the document.

Estate complexity

A modest estate left to a spouse or children sits at the lower end; a business, a trust or ancestral property pushes the price up.

Property in more than one state

Immovable property in several states, or assets abroad, usually needs more careful drafting, which tends to cost more.

Level of advice

A self-drafted will is cheapest; an advocate advising on your own family position and the personal law that applies to you is where most of the extra cost, and value, lies.

Registration and notarisation

Neither is compulsory, but each adds a fee, and some online services bundle help with registration into their price.

Typical Indian market ranges for informational purposes only. Succession is governed by more than one personal law and registration practice differs by state, so these are a national overview rather than the rule in any one state. Prices vary by advocate, city and estate complexity, and may change over time. Always check the source and consult a professional before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a will cost in India?

It depends on the route. A self-drafted will costs little or nothing, an online will service usually charges a few thousand rupees, and an advocate typically charges more, rising with the complexity of the estate. The dated ranges and their sources are in the table above; always check a provider’s current price.

Is a cheaper will still legally valid?

Yes, if it is properly signed and attested. The trade-off with cheaper routes is usually less guidance, so a mistake that makes a will unclear or open to challenge is easier to miss.

Do I have to register my will?

No. Registration is optional in India, although some people choose it as evidence that the will is genuine. It carries a separate fee at the sub-registrar’s office.

Are there ongoing costs after making a will?

There can be. You may pay again to revise a will after a marriage, the birth of a child or the purchase of property, and some providers charge for safe custody.
