Individual vs Organisation

Choose the right application type for your situation. This guide explains the differences and helps you decide which to select.

Last reviewed

Individual

Advantage: Your personal name in the directory
Advantage: Sole practitioner or self-employed
Advantage: Quick and simple application
Limitation: No firm name, firm size or business structure
Limitation: No firm-level profile or team members

Organisation

Advantage: Firm name in the directory
Advantage: Law firms and legal practices
Advantage: Business structure and firm size on the listing
Advantage: Firm-level registrations and insurance
Advantage: Organisation description and branding

Choose Individual If…

You are a sole practitioner working independently, or you want to be listed under your personal name rather than a firm name.

Individual applications are simpler and faster to complete. You’ll provide your personal details, qualifications, and office information without needing to set up organisational structures.

Choose Organisation If…

You are applying on behalf of a law firm, legal practice, or chambers. The organisation name will appear in the directory listing.

Organisation applications allow you to:

  • Record your business structure and a matching firm size category
  • Define your role within the organisation
  • Hold registrations and insurance at firm level as well as personally
  • Present a unified firm brand in the directory

What’s Different?

Organisation-Only Fields

Organisation Name: Your registered legal practice name

Business Structure: Sole trader, partnership, limited liability partnership, limited company, public limited company, or other

Firm Size: Sole practitioner, 2 to 10, 11 to 50, 51 to 250, or more than 250. The options offered depend on your business structure, so a sole trader can only be a sole practitioner

Your Role: Your position within the organisation (Partner, Associate, etc.)

Both application types support multiple jurisdictions, multiple offices, contact persons on each office, and all the same verification features. The main difference is how you are presented in the directory and the additional organisational structure fields.

Your business structure also decides which constitutional document we ask for: a partnership agreement, an LLP agreement, or articles of incorporation for limited and public limited companies. Sole traders, like individuals, are not asked for one.

Can I Change My Selection?

Yes, but with a warning. If you’ve already entered organisation details and switch to Individual, that data will be cleared. You’ll see a confirmation dialog showing what will be removed before the change is made.

Switching from Individual to Organisation doesn’t remove any data - it just reveals the additional organisation fields for you to complete.
